Help us Deliver better care for you and Canadians everywhere

Keeping it Concise

For individuals interested and able, we’re asking for a small monthly financial contribution.

Where will this contribution go? 100% of contributions will go toward improving the freely available and shared software used by family doctors around the country, including Magenta Health physicians. An example.

Why? Better software improves the quality of care we deliver to you, and Canadians everywhere - better communication, better follow-up, fewer mistakes.

If you can help, please visit our Patreon page. A small monthly contributions from just 1 in 100 patients will make a meaningful difference.

Hear from OUr Co-Founder

Keith Chung is one of the founders of Magenta Health, and currently leads its IT efforts.

My name is Keith Chung, and I helped co-found Magenta Health together with two family doctors. I studied math and computer science; then became a corporate lawyer. After a few years, it was time to do something that felt more meaningful to me.

Today, my physician co-founders and I continue to work on “solving” publicly funded primary care in Ontario. To us, this is as simple as Ontario residents having timely access to excellent care, all within a publicly funded system. The billion dollar question is how to achieve this in an affordable way for taxpayers.

I left my cushy downtown office and job because I thought I could make a difference - I could use my varied background to tackle problems in a different way. Most importantly, I thought we could solve many problems with the effective and innovative use of technology.

Surprisingly, the core system we use - a popular Electronic Medical Record system - is freely available and shared software used by family doctors around the country. It suffers from a significant lack of investment though since it’s “free”.

The founders and physicians at Magenta Health already voluntarily contribute more than $100,000 annually towards improving this software, but this isn’t enough. To make it better for the benefit of Canadians everywhere, we want to quadruple our yearly investment at minimum, to $400,000.

With more than 35,000 active patients, that’s only $10 per patient per year. I hate to ask, but here goes. If you can afford it - can you contribute towards this goal?

Sincerely,
Keith Chung

    • Canada has more family doctors per capita than ever but “half of Canadians either don’t have a family doctor (19%) or struggle to see the one they have (29%)” (Angus Reid) because they spend more time per patient / patient visit than they used to (PubMed, TheStar).

    • We partly blame the software family doctors need to use. It’s 1990s software not built for the always connected world of today. We think it drives the 18 million hours a year doctors spend on unnecessary administrative work (CFIB), why medical students aren’t interested in becoming family doctors, mid career family doctors leave entirely, and those closer to retirement retire early (OMA).

    • We are working with a coalition of family doctors across the country to collaborate on improving this software.

    • Because it’s shared and freely available, we already fund a full-time software developer to provide better care for you and Canadians everywhere.

    • We think more of this work needs to happen. We can’t do it alone. We are asking those in our community to help if they can.

    • This software is already used to care for millions of Canadians.

    • It’s known as “open source” software that is shared and developed by a community together.

    • It’s the third most popular system used by thousands of family doctors in Canada!

    • Magenta Health and its physicians already effectively contribute more than $100,000 annually towards this software development.
